The Elements of Art + The Principles of Design
The building blocks used to create beautiful and quality works of Art.

Elements of Art -are a group of aspects used in teaching and studying works of Art. - “Good” and “Bad” works of art will contain most of if not all of the Elements of Art. - There are 9 Elements of Art.

1: LINE - Line has different “Direction” that creates “Movement”
- types of Line, “Quality of a Line”

2: SHAPE - Shapes can be geometric or organic

3: SPACE Positive: is the space taken up by something in an area.
Negative: is the space around something in an area.

4: VALUE -...refers to the lightness or darkness of a object or color
- It provides depth and perception. - Tone or Shade

5: FORM - “The Make Up of a Composition...”
- what the thing (composition) is made of...

6: TEXTURE - Two types Texture: - Tactile (touch) - Optical (visual)
-surface quality

7: COLOR - Colors convey feelings or create a sense of mood

8: SIZE - also referred to as Scale
-the relationship of one shape to that of another.

9: DIRECTION - Horizontal = calmness, stability, and tranquility
- Vertical = balance, formality, and alertness - Oblique = movement and action. - Direction creates movement.

The Principles of Design
-are a set of guidelines to be considered when designing a work of Art. - There are 9 Principles of Design.

1: BALANCE - Asymmetrical: is the balance that does not weigh equally on both sides. - Symmetrical: balance that is equal on both sides - Radial: balance that is equal in length from the middle

2: PROPORTION -is a measurement of the size and/or quantity within a composition.

3: GRADATION -how the eye moves throughout a piece..

4: REPETITION - Pattern and Rhythm is showing consistency with Elements of Art.

5: CONTRAST -is a combination of opposites “Juxtaposition”

6: HARMONY -creates a quality of wholeness, oneness, or completeness in a piece

7: DOMINANCE -adds a sense of emphasis.

8: MOVEMENT -creates action in art...

9: VARIETY -the quality of having different forms or types of Elements in a composition.
