3. Dial calipers are used to measure depth, diameter and thickness.
Measures Internal Dimensions
Dial gives additional resolution for dimension measurement
Measures Depth
Ruler section give initial value for measured dimension
Measures External Dimensions

4. Determining the measured value
Indicates unit system being used
Measurement passes 1 in mark
Does not quite make it all the way to 3. From the ruler the measurement is 1.2
Show max number of decimal places possible once dial reading is added to initial ruler measurement
Dial is at 68
Dial caliper is reading a value of 1.268in

Note: Your measurement depends on how hard the caliper edges press into the flexible rubber. Here, you want the knife edges to contact the grommet but not deform (or flex) the grommet when performing your measurement.

7. Example: Measuring Depth
Extend the end into depth being measured

8. Remember to “Zero” Your Caliper
Measurement edges are touching, but the caliper still reads inches. This caliper needs to be zeroed!
With the measurement edges closed, turn the dial clockwise until the reading is inches.
