1 Where rivers begin Pg6,7 Geography success

2 Rivers near you.. Kuwait does not have any permanent rivers, because it is actually near sea level. The nearest rivers to Kuwait are Tigris and Euphrates, which originate in Turkey(source) , and pass through Syria and Iraq.

3 Sources of river water. Streams Springs Lakes Glaciers
Usually a river is formed form a combination of these.

4 The fresh water that flows in rivers comes from rain and melted snow
The fresh water that flows in rivers comes from rain and melted snow. Water on the ground forms tiny streams above ground. A stream is a small narrow river (a baby river!)

5 Some water goes underground
Some water goes underground. The water passes between permeable rocks, until it meets a layer of impermeable rocks which will not let the water pass. When this happens water has no choice but to trickle out of the ground as spring.

6 Examples of springs. Have you seen springs before? Maybe while on holiday? 

7 Lakes are like really big springs
Lakes are like really big springs. A few rivers have lakes as their primary sources of water.

8 Other rivers, in high mountain areas come from the ends of melting glaciers. These are rivers of ice that slide slowly down from the mountain.

9 Erosion All streams contain sand and other pieces of rock. Which are transported (carried along) by water. These pieces of rock and sand scrape the bottom and sides of the streams, slowly wearing them away. This is known as Erosion. The steam carves a V-shape valley for itself.

10 Tributaries Small rivers eventually join together, and the rivers becomes bigger and bigger. The smaller rivers and streams that join the main larger river are called tributaries. The area of land that supplies the river with water is known as the river basin.

11 Pieces of rock and gravel are usually swept away by the shear force of the river. If a pebble gets caught in a small hollow on the river bed, it swirls around and around under the water, carving our a hole on the rock called a pot-hole.

12 Answer questions 3 and 4, on pg7. H/W: Pick any river
Answer questions 3 and 4, on pg7. H/W: Pick any river. Write 10 facts about it. Please don’t all pick the river NILE!
