Existence of God Revision
Learning Objective: To revise the Characteristics of God unit. I can give arguments and examples for and against the existence of God. I can practice writing a 6 mark AO2 exam answer. I can understand what makes a successful 6 mark AO2 exam answer.

Can we prove the existence of God?
You need to draw a continuum line on your table. You need to write each bullet point (on next slide) on a post it note and briefly give one or two facts about it Decide as a group where you want to place each post it note on your continuum line We can prove the existence of God We cannot prove the existence of God

Post It Note Bullet Points
We can prove the existence of God We cannot prove the existence of God Conversion of Paul (Religious Experience) David Hume William Paley Thomas Aquinas Abraham First Cause Argument Design Argument Ian McCormack (Religious Experience) Faith Theist Atheist Agnostic Evil and Suffering The Human Eye Transcendent Nicky Cruz (Religious Experience) Science (Big Bang Theory and Evolution) Students need to write a couple of facts about the person/example on their post it note and place it on the continuum line.

6 Mark AO2 Exam Answer ‘It is impossible for humans to prove that God exists.’ Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to religious ideas in your answer. Agree – it is impossible to prove Disagree – it is not impossible to prove Remind students to BUG the question and briefly plan an answer to the question. Remind them that their continuum line is already pretty much their plan.

‘It is impossible for humans to prove that God exists.’ Do you agree?
On the one hand it is impossible to try to prove that God exists as God is transcendent. This means that he is beyond space and time and has no limits. Consequently due to this he is so far beyond human understanding that it is impossible to prove his existence so therefore there is no point in trying. Alternatively, God has created us as intelligent beings and we can therefore use this intelligence to its full capability by trying to prove his existence. This is demonstrated by Thomas Aquinas’ First Cause argument, which states that everything has a cause and this cannot go back to infinity so there must be an uncaused first cause which is God. As this is a logical argument it demonstrates humans can use their ability to try and prove God. In conclusion I believe that it is impossible to prove God so instead people should just have faith in God. Faith is a leap into the unknown and if we had definitive proof it would remove our freewill and the genuine choice that God wants us to have about his existence. 1 mark for a simple point 2 mark for developing the point 3rd mark for another simple point 4th mark for developing the point 5th mark for a balanced answer with developed reference to religion 6th mark for a well argued response
