Networks in our daily life
2
Define network topologies and representations
Lesson Objectives: Define network topologies and representations Understand cabling and media Understand UTP cabling Differentiate between different types of cabling
3
1. Network Topology
4
Network Topology Network topology is the arrangement of the various elements (links, nodes, etc.) of a communication network.
5
(Assign IP address for each device manually)
Group Activity (List – Draw – Share) List all the devices that can access internet at school ? (Assign IP address for each device manually) Draw the network topology of school network. Share your drawing with your class mates ..
6
2. Cabling & media
7
Types of Network Media Copper wires within cables
Glass or plastic fibers (Fiber-optic cable) Wireless transmission
8
Criteria to choose Network Media
Distance media can successfully carry a signal Environment in which media is to be installed Amount of data and Speed at which it must be transmitted Cost of media and installation
9
Common network cables Twisted-pair Coaxial cable Fibre-optic
10
Cabling and media Modern networks primarily use three types of media.
Twisted pair - TP most homes and schools are wired with twisted-pair copper cable. it is cheap in comparison to other types of cabling Coaxial Cable: constructed with copper or aluminum. cable television companies use it to provide services and also used by satellite communication System. Fibre-optic cable: made of glass or plastic, have very high bandwidth to carry large amount of data .telecom companies use it.
11
Twisted-pair cables Limitations
Data over copper cables are sensitive to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Which reduces the data throughput rate that cable can provide. Microwave ovens and fluorescent light fixtures are sources of EMI. Cross talk occurs when cables are bundled together for long lengths. Cross talk reduce the data-carrying capacity of the medium. consist of one or more pairs of insulated copper wires. They are twisted together and housed in a protective jacket.
12
What do think… which cable is best?!
Types of twisted-pair cables Unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) – This is the most commonly encountered type of network cable in many areas. 2- Shielded cables (STP) – These are used almost exclusively in Europe What do think… which cable is best?!
13
Now … which cable is best?!
Comparison between UTP & STP – Book Activity P-72 Very expensive Not flexible Have additional requirements Difficult to work with Most common Inexpensive High bandwidth Easy to install Best for factories. Why? Shielded Twisted Pairs Unshielded Twisted Pairs Now … which cable is best?!
