1 Intro to Neuroscience

2 Agenda Groups Discussion Neural Messages Get in your group
Assign numbers to your members (1-4) Discussion Neural Messages Parts of a Neuron Neuron Activation Neurotransmitters at the Synapse

3 Reading Discussion No writing allowed.

4 A Note About Neuropsychology
Technical Limited Time Book Coverage vs. Our Goals

5 The Neuron Nerve Cells - Billions in the nervous system
- Carry chemical “messages”

6 Receives messages from other neurons

7 Carries messages to other neurons

8 Fat and protein coating on the axon that aids transmission

9 Where messages are sent to other neurons.

10 Resting Potential

11 Action Potential All-or-None
- Message is either transmitted or it is not

12 Action Potential In Action
On WebCT

13 The Synapse Synapse Neurotransmitters - Specialized chemical messages
- Space between terminal button and dendrite Neurotransmitters - Specialized chemical messages The Synapse

14 Transmitter-Receptor Fit
Three Sites: - Two on the terminal buttons -- Release Sites -- Reuptake Sites - One on the dendrites -- Receptor Sites Neurotransmitters are specialized. Different neurotransmitters have specific sites. Terminal Button Transmitter-Receptor Fit

15 Drugs at the Synapse

16 Neurotransmitters’ Specialized Roles
Many varying effects on behavior/thought. Neurotransmitters either inhibit or excite the next neuron. Inhibitory Messages – Makes firing less likely. Excitatory Messages – Makes firing more likely. Neurotransmitters are not limited to one role all the time. Are usually one or the other most of the time.
