10 Learning to Honor the Dishonorable

11 Called to Honor Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor Romans 13:7

12 To whom are we called to honor?
Colossians 3:18 – 4:1, 1 Peter 3:1-7 Romans 13:1-5 Ephesians 5:21 / Romans 12:10 1 Timothy 5:3 1 Timothy 5:17 1 Peter 2:17 Ro 13:1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience' sake.

13 To whom are we called to honor?
Colossians 3:18 – 4:1, 1 Peter 3:1-7 Romans 13:1-5 Ephesians 5:21 / Romans 12:10 1 Timothy 5:3 1 Timothy 5:17 1 Peter 2:17 Eph 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God. Ro 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 1Ti 5:3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; 1Ti 5:17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. 1Pe 2:17 Honor all men; love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.

14 To whom are we called to honor?
Wives Husbands, Husbands Wives, Children Parents, Servants Masters, Citizens Leaders, Brethren Widows, Brethren Leaders, Brethren All Men

15 It is easy when: Husband / wife follows a Godly model Parents prioritize children’s spiritual growth Employers are fair and honest Rulers rule with benevolence Elders are perfect in word and deed All men respect morality

16 How do we honor: Husband / wife who is godless or weak Parents in name only Employers who see only the dollar Rulers who are wicked Elders who stumble or err The immoral multitudes

17 How we honor the dishonorable
We are not free from honoring them 1 Peter 2: Peter 3:1 1 Peter 3:14 Acts 23:1-5 1Pe 2:18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. 19 For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. 1Pe 3:1 ¶ Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, 1Pe 3:14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled."

18 How we honor the dishonorable
We are not free from honoring them 1 Peter 2: Peter 3:1 1 Peter 3:14 Acts 23:1-5 We are called to honor others NOT by their worthiness, but by God’s worthiness 1Pe 2:18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.

19 How we honor the dishonorable
We are not free from honoring them So how do we honor the dishonorable? By understanding what it means to HONOR 1Pe 2:18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.

20 Understanding Honor in the Bible
We often see HONOR as a mindset The Bible describes it as actions

21 HONOR as defined in the Bible:
Children honor their parents: Matthew 15:4-6 - “obey your parents in the Lord” - Eph. 6:1 “let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents” - 1 Tim. 5:4 Mt 15:4 "For God commanded, saying, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.' 5 "But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God" -- 6 'then he need not honor his father or mother.' Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

22 HONOR as defined in the Bible:
Husband honors his wife: 1 Peter 3:7 “Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her” - 1 Cor. 7:3 “love your wives” - Eph. 5:25 “do not be bitter toward them” - Col. 3:19 1Pe 3:7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

23 HONOR as defined in the Bible:
Wife honors her husband: Titus 2:3-5 “chaste conduct accompanied by fear” – 1 Pet. 3:2 “submit to your own husbands” – Eph. 5:22 “the wife (render) to her husband (the affection due him)” 1 Cor. 7:3 Tit 2:3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things-- 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

24 HONOR as defined in the Bible:
Servants honor their Masters: 1 Timothy 6:1-2 “not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity” – Tit. 2:9-10 “obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice” – Col. 3:22 1Ti 6:1 ¶ Let as many bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. 2 And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.

25 HONOR as defined in the Bible:
Subjects honor their leaders: Romans 13:1-6 “whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance” – Rom. 13:2 “because of this you also pay taxes” – Rom 13:6 “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority” – 1 Tim. 2:1-2 1Ti 6:1 ¶ Let as many bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. 2 And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.

26 Making a Point We struggle to honor because we believe: - I must come to embrace dishonor In fact, God calls us to honor “in the Lord” - By His particular commandments
