You may be able to find an article of interest by using one of the following links: If possible, print it out. Choose eight short phrases from the article that you think are powerful. AS Level Only Part 2 :  Making Notes The Lonely Londoners – Sam Selvon One of the texts you study, The Lonely Londoners, is set in 1950’s Britain, a time when many people came to live and work in the UK from other countries. You should research this era, and make notes on what you find. During your research, you should explore: The British Empire – what it was, when it began to be formed, what its aims were, how countries were colonised, which countries were colonised, and when/how/why British rule came to an end. What the commonwealth is What is meant by ‘Windrush Era’, including the contribution that troops from countries other than Britain made to Britain’s effort during WW2 What the common experience of Britain was for people moving over from former colonies during the post war years. Heart of Darkness – Joseph Conrad On the course, you will study Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. To help you understand the context of the novel, please make notes on imperialism in the Congo in the 19th century. In your research, you should explore: Why European countries such as Belgium went to Africa and colonised countries there Who was King Leopold and what did he do What was the Belgian Free State and how did it operate What was Joseph Conrad’s personal experience of the Belgian Free State.
