1 Lesson 1 Day 1

2 Day 1

3 Characters and Setting
Focus Skill Characters and Setting Turn to page 16 in your book. I know I usually find out about the characters and setting in the beginning of a story. If the story takes place at a school, I know I might read about children in a classroom or on a playground. As I read a story, I think about what a character says and does. I think how I would feel if I were a the character. Let’s read pages together. T32

6 Listening Comprehension Read Aloud
Fix it! Good readers try to read every word correctly, or accurately. When they realize that they have read a word incorrectly, they go back and reread it so that the sentence makes sense. Connect with what you know. Think about your first day at a new school. Turn and talk to a partner about your first day at a new school. “First Day Jitters” is the title of the story I am going to read to you. Jitters – to be nervous Did you have jitters on your first day? T34

7 Listening Comprehension Read Aloud
Genre: Realistic Fiction Does a story about a first day at school sound like real life? Stories about things that could happen in real life are called realistic fiction. I know that realistic fiction is like real life. I expect that the characters in this story will be like people I know. I expect that the school will be like my school in many ways. T34

8 Listening Comprehension Read Aloud
Focus Skill: Characters and Setting Two important parts of every story are the characters – people in the story – and the setting – when and where the story takes place. Listen to identify the characters as I read “First Day Jitters”. Just as in real life, the characters do not stay in one place; so one story can take place in several settings. t34

9 Listening Comprehension Read Aloud
Respond! What is Realistic Fiction? A story that could happen in real life. Who were the characters in the story? Where did the story take place? Why was Sarah nervous about teaching? Thumbs up if you enjoyed the story, thumbs down if you didn’t. t34

11 What’s Realistic Fiction?
I know that realistic fiction is like real life. I expect that the characters in this story will be like people I know. I expect that the school will be like my school in many ways. Who are the characters in this story? Where is the setting? Can a setting be in more than one place? T44

12 Graphic Organizers One way good readers find out information about a story is by using a graphic organizer. Like the one here and on page 20 of your student edition. Characters Setting

13 Graphic Organizers Ruby Angela Miss Hart Ruby’s school Ruby

14 Day 3 I will organize words in “Alphabetical Order”. I will learn how to answer an open-ended question.

15 Alphabetical Order Also known as, ABC order!
One way to organize words is to put them in ABC order, or the order of letters in the alphabet. The words in the dictionary appear in ABC order so that it is easier for us to find them! Other items that are in ABC order: Thesaurus, Encyclopedia, and Phone book t66-67

16 Alphabetical Order Tell me your ABCs.
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q U R S T U V W X Y and Z! It’s a good idea to think about whether the word you are going to look up is in the beginning, middle, or the end of the alphabet so you can look at the beginning, middle, or end of the book. T66

17 Alphabetical Order A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q U R S T U V W X Y and Z! ABCDEFGH – BEGINNING IJKLMNOPQURS- MIDDLE TUVWXYZ- END t66-67

18 Alphabetical Order Where would I find the word zoo?: beginning, middle, or end Where would I find the word lane?: beginning, middle, or end Which word would come first great or blue? Which word would come after blue?: Aim or Can?

19 Alphabetical Order Using the second letter!
When you want to look up several entries that all have the same first letter, you have to look at the second letter in each word. Get out your notebook and write these words down. Underline the second letter in each word and then tell me if you would find it in the beginning, middle, or end of the encyclopedia. Snail Skunk Shark Scorpion Snake

20 Alphabetical Order Where do these words go?
Pleasant Coincidence Modeled Loyal Gushed Recited What about these words? You might even have to take a look at the third letter! Tortoise Turtle Tiger Toad T67

21 Day 4 Reading Notebook and Passage “Friends”
Fluency (Fill in the blank and choral read) ARMT/RISC

22 Characters and Setting
Who or what might be characters in a story? People and/or animals Remember good readers use what characters say and do to understand how the characters feel. Where and when a story takes place can also affect how the characters behave. T81

23 Today’s Read Aloud Friends
What is the purpose for reading a story called “Friends”? A: For fun, to learn about friendship, or to practice reading. Listen to my voice as I read this story. T77

24 Friends Turtle was swimming along among the lily pads. It was right in the middle of the pond, where the sun was warm and everything was peaceful. Suddenly something bumped into him and water splashed up into his face. “Who is that?” he called out in his little voice. “It’s just me. I’m Ellie,” came the reply. “If you’d look behind you, you’d see that I’m an elephant.” Turtle wasn’t used to finding other creatures in the pond. The truth was, it was quite a lonely pond for him. He just hadn’t really thought about how lonely he was until he heard the elephant speak to him. “Yes,” he finally said, “I can see that you are an elephant. And I’m a turtle. I swim a lot, but sometimes I sit on the rocks to warm up.” Transparency R7

25 Friends “Well,” said Ellie, “maybe we could be friends. I visit this pond sometimes to keep cool. It’s awfully lonely here, don’t you think? Soon, Turtle and Ellie were the best of friends, swimming and playing together whenever they could. This just goes to show that, sometimes, new friends can make quite a splash. Transparency R7

26 Open-ended Response How are the animal characters important in the story? Use details from the story to support your answer. Write your answer in the answer document.

27 Alphabetical Order

29 Alex’s New Home It was summer and Alex and his family had moved to a new town. Everything there was new for Alex. He had a new apartment, new neighbors, and soon there would be a new school. In his apartment building there were a lot of little children, but they were too young for Alex to play with. Most days, Alex’s Mom allowed him to play in front of the building, but he didn’t stay outside for long. transparency R1

30 Alex’s New Home “Its no fun playing alone”, Alex complained.
“I know”, said his mom. “I wish school started tomorrow”, said Alex. “How many more days until I meet someone my own age”? “Just five more days until school”, his mom replied. transparency R1

31 Alex’s New Home What is the setting? How does the setting affect Alex?
