1 Sparta

2 Geography Sparta was a city-state in the country of Greece. It contained rich, fertile soil, which helped them because it allowed them to have plenty of crops. Sparta also had its own river which was called Evorotas and since Sparta was located near the Mediterranean ocean it gave Spartans unlimited access to water. Sparta was considered mountainous and flat. It had plains in which the Spartans grew many crops including olives, grapes, and figs. olive grove in Sparta Greek olives

4 Spartan Religion

5 Warfare The Spartan army was known for their bravery and great skills on the battle field. They not only used great warfare tactics but came up with a few things that would help them during battle. During battle Spartan men were equipped with bronze breastplates, helmets and cheek plates, which protected them from unsuspected blows to the body. As weapons, Spartans used spears called dorus that was 7-9 feet in length. They also used Kopis, which was a short sword that the Spartans used to slice, stab and kill their enemies in close combat. This sword was curved and heavy which also gave them a tremendous amount of control during battle. Spartan Kopis

8 The Delian League The Delian League was the Athenian Alliance.
It was formed after defeating the Persians BC 480. Several Ionian cities joined. The league was similar to the modern organization, NATO. The Delian League gained a lot of power, and developed into an empire. (Athens) Named the “Delian League” because its treasure was placed in Delos.

9 The Peloponnesian League
The Peloponnesian League was the Spartan alliance. Sparta made a confederacy of the Peloponnesian states. Sparta was in charge; and each state would send a deputy for decision and making, and have their own treaty.

10 Significant Events Peloponnesian War Lasted from 431 B.C. to 404 B.C.
It was Athens vs. Sparta, Corinth, Thebes, & others. The are three phases of the war: The Archidamian war The Sicilian War The Ionian or Decelean War Sparta feared the growth and power of Athens, which caused the war.
