Warm Up You will be given 5 minutes to answer the following: In a 5-7 sentence paragraph, explain why so many people immigrated to the United States during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Use at least 2 supporting details in your response.

Inferring from what we have learned last class, why do you think immigrants had such a difficult time finding jobs? (turn and talk to discuss) The available work was something immigrants may not yet have known how to do, they may not know much English so they were limited in the jobs they could take

Those immigrants who made it through the reception center faced difficult questions, such as, where would they go? Or How would they live? Some had relatives or friends to stay with and to help them find jobs, but others knew no one and had to strike out completely on their own.

An immigrant’s greatest challenge was finding work. Sometimes organizations in their homelands recruited, or tried to sign up workers for jobs in the U.S. These recruiters supplied American employers with unskilled workers to unload cargo, dig ditches, or do similar work. What do you think the working conditions at jobs like these were? (Turn and talk)

The countries fastest growing industries hired immigrants. In the steel mills of Pittsburgh for example, most laborers in the early 1900’s were immigrant men. They often worded 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage from the textbook titled, “New Ways of Life” (580) and answer the following: What does assimilate mean? What is a synonym of assimilate? Who can use it in a sentence? What is the “gist” of this passage? What are 2 details supporting the “gist”

Independent Practice Independently read a passage titled, “Setting up Neighborhoods” and answer the following comprehension questions: What would be some benefits of living in a neighborhood with people who are from the same country as you? How was assimilation of immigrants slowed down in America?

Group Work Students will receive a document titled “Immigrant Workers” Group 1-Is this excerpt a primary or secondary source? How do you know? Group 2-How would you feel if you had immigrated to a strange country only to be faced with this type of circumstance? Group 3- Summarize this except in your own words. Group 4-Are there any unfamiliar vocabulary words? If so, define them using context clues
