Total knee arthroplasty. (A) Diagram of a total knee arthroplasty
Total knee arthroplasty. (A) Diagram of a total knee arthroplasty. The metal condylar component can be cemented or not. The metal tibial component is usually cemented. A slab of polyethylene articulates with the condylar component and may be fixed to the tibial tray or allow some motion between the polyethylene and the tray. The patella may or may not be resurfaced (a resurfaced patella is illustrated). A resurfaced patella consists of a cemented polyethylene component usually without a metal backing. (B) Frontal and (C) lateral radiographs of a normal total knee arthroplasty. The polyethylene thickness (white arrow) is normal (> 8 mm) as evaluated on standing anteroposterior and lateral views.
