Three types of fixation displayed on three different patients
Three types of fixation displayed on three different patients. (A) External fixation: a plaster cast immobilizes a distal radius fracture (arrow). (B) Internal fixation: a dynamic compression plate used for wrist arthrodesis, a fusion technique to relieve pain and provide stability in patients with advanced arthritis. (C) Combination of internal and external fixation: standard uniplanar external fixator used for treatment of a comminuted distal radius fracture. Pins are anchored into the second metacarpal and radial shaft. An ulnar styloid fracture is also present. (Image courtesy of Mihra Taljanovic, MD, University of Arizona.)
