The Dakota People -Dakota/Lakota/Nakota=*the allies*
-Sioux=Ojibway name for the tribe, means *little snakes* -Original Dakota homelands: now Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota and South Dakota -13 Sioux political subdivisions, combined into seven major tribes (Mdewakanton, Sisseton, Teton, Wahpekute, Wahpeton, Yankton, and Yanktonai Sioux)

Homes -large buffalo-hide tents called tipis (or teepees)

Lifestyle -Villages and work varied according to the seasons: Winter
Spring Summer Fall Men hunted and fished hunting parties moved to the year's chosen hunting grounds for the annual hunt Women/ Children/ Elderly gathered wood, processed hides made clothes sugaring camps cultivated crops

Clothing -women: long deerskin or elkskin dresses
-men: breechcloths with leather leggings and buckskin shirts -moccasins -buffalo-hide robes in bad weather -warriors and chiefs: feather warbonnets (not in everyday life)

-Established laws enforced by young men who proved themselves heroic in battle -Tribes split into bands
