Tobacco Look through the following examples of tobacco marketing from the mid 20th century. Think about: Is smoking promoted as positive or negative? Who are they using to promote the message? How do you think the images were viewed by the public?

More recently, tobacco advertising has been restricted in the UK.
Can you think of any examples of this? How often are we now exposed to tobacco advertising? Pupils may be directed to think about advertising on packaging, displays in shops and supermarkets, lack of advertising on TV and sport. Ultimately, advertising has been highly restricted by govt - particulalry around children

Smoking among young people
As the government has tried to help people make healthier choices, do you think this has had an impact on the numbers of young people actually smoking?

E-Cigarettes Increasingly, ‘e-cigarettes’ are becoming accepted as tools to help people stop smoking – can this be a good thing? Do any of these adverts (and others you may have seen) advertise their potential to be stop smoking aids or an alternative to tobacco? Any ideas why this may be? While e-cigarettes have benefits for those wishing to stop smoking, do you think the following adverts focus on this? Are they selling a stop smoking product? Or are they selling a ‘lifestyle’ choice?

But... E-cigarettes are proving more and more popular in helping people stop smoking. Should we restrict their sale if they have potentially positive impacts for smokers? Watch this clip by BBC… E-Cigarettes - good or bad?

Discuss with your partner why E-cigarettes are banned at school.
