4 Clickers in the Classroom

5 Clickers in the Classroom
Why? Students like them! Student engagement Anonymous participation Provide an opportunity for active learning Facilitate group discussion (one per small group) Gauge student understanding vs. a whole class discussion where only 1-2 students respond Why? - Students like them! - Student engagement - Anonymous participation - Provide an opportunity for active learning - Facilitate group discussion (one per small group) - Gauge student understanding vs. a whole class discussion where only 1-2 students respond

6 Clickers in the Classroom
What are they? Two pieces of equipment One Receiver plugs into Instructor Computer and A set of Response Cards with buttons for students to push. These can be reserved and checked out from AV Services once you’ve had basic training. We offer basic training to all faculty that takes about 45 min- 1 hr. We have some sessions pre-scheduled at the beginning of each semester Or you can contact us and we’ll setup an appointment. Let’s try them!

7 Have you ever used clickers?
Yes No I’m not sure

8 Research shows that interactions between learner-to-learner can be as valuable and instructive as learner-to-content and learner-to-instructor. True False Not sure Moore, M. G. (1996) Distance Education: A Systems View. California: Wadsworth Publishing.

9 Publisher Test Banks in Canvas

10 Publisher Test Banks in Canvas
Have you adopted a textbook that has test banks? We can obtain most all publisher test banks and put them into your Canvas course for you. You can use those test banks to make quizzes or tests that are hidden from students until you want them seen. 13 Rethinking quizzes as a strategy to support Self-Guided Learning & Self-assessment

14 Quizzes as a Strategy to Support Self-Guided Learning & Self-assessment
Rationale: Might be one way to provide additional help to your students; could be a risk-free, reinforcing mechanism. Best Practices Use to provide additional practice Allow multiple or unlimited attempts Scoring counts only towards required participation. Use question groups: One or two questions from each group is displayed each time a student takes the quiz. Allow students to immediately see their results with all answer choices and the correct answers and feedback. Use feedback: As an opportunity to once again explain

15 Respondus (Makes quizzes, tests, test banks for online use in Canvas)

16 Respondus What is it? What it does that Canvas doesn’t
Campus site license; free; easy, training usually takes less then 45 minutes. Let’s you create and put quiz, test, or test bank into Canvas, or any other learning management system (Blackboard, Angel, Desire2Learn, etc.) What it does that Canvas doesn’t Images in quiz answers and feedback. (Ex: more sophisticated equations that are created with MathType.) In addition to making quizzes and tests, it makes test banks that can later be used to create quizzes and tests.

17 Let’s try one! Respondus Quizzes
Try one with Images in Answers or Feedback Why Might You Want to Use Them? Automatic grading Save time Help students learn by providing instant feedback Provide practice exercises for self- assessment Long-term value: Import quizzes or tests into other Canvas courses. CLICK Let’s try one!

18 Respondus (more capabilities than Canvas)
More that it does… but Canvas doesn’t (yet) An original quiz file is kept on your machine. (Might be good, might not ever be necessary to have.) Output includes a formatted paper document for students that need to take all exams on paper.

19 Interactive games and activities
That track, score, and grade in Canvas

20 Softchalk Cloud: Interactive Games and Activities that Track, Score, and Grade in Canvas
Overview: Make interactive mini-games with scoring that work when linked to Canvas and the grade book. We offer training and can help you get started. We are developing an online support site in Canvas with licensing, handouts, samples. Let’s look at some sample activities

21 Interactive Games and Activities that Track and Score (created with Softchalk Cloud)
Let’s try some! You’ll need to navigate to certain pages in each lesson

22 Try at least one of the samples (created with Softchalk Cloud)
Let’s try some! After a few have completed the activities and submitted them for scoring KE- login to Canvas and show the Grade book columns for those activities

23 Poll Everywhere Mobile phone text messaging

24 Poll Everywhere Free Easy to use
In the classroom everyone can see live feedback as mobile text messages are received OR as audience clicks on the poll using their browser. In Canvas, could add a link the URL so students could poll Let’s look at some sample activities

25 Try one of the first two samples
Let’s try some! After a few have completed the activities and submitted them for scoring KE - login to Canvas and show the Grade book columns for those activities Show third sample - Download a PowerPoint slide that can be clicked on during a class and then students can send a mobile phone text message.

26 Poll Everywhere See more general information, including some short videos examples of how it works, on our wiki
