HEV was classified as a member of the Caliciviridae family but have been reclassified in the genus Hepevirus of the family Hepeviridae. There are 4 major recognized genotypes with a single known serotype. HEV, the major etiologic agent of enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis worldwide, is a spherical, non-enveloped, single stranded RNA virus that is approximately 32 to 34 nm in diameter.
