The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Enforce rules concerning children's online privacy Place parents in control over what information is collected from their children online Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the school

Product Updates Related to COPPA/FERPA
Student Registration Students may not self-register their own username / passwords All usernames / passwords for students will be created by the district / school / teacher All student passcodes will be removed from MyAdmin Parental Notification We will ask schools to provide parent addresses as part of the data upload process. For those schools who provide this information, an will be sent to the parents to notify them that their child has been provided access to our services and to contact us if they want their child's account to be disabled. For those schools who do not provide a parent address, upon the first login of a student using the school provided usernames, they will be asked to verify their age (over/under 13 years) If they verify that they are 13 or older, they will enter Student Center If they verify that they are under 13, they will be asked to enter their parents address An will be sent to the parent notifying them of their child’s access. If desired, the parent should contact Discovery Education to remove access If there is no parent address, the student will click on a PDF be printed out and given to their parents and the student will enter Student Center

Student is asked if they are over or under 13 years old Student is directed to the appropriate spot depending on the answer Students.DiscoveryEducation.com Students log into Discovery Education to view assigned content, track progress on completed assignments and assessments, and access bookmarked content through My Content.

Example of Email Sent to Parent/Guardian
Dear Parent / Guardian, Your child’s school has purchased a subscription to a Discovery Education online service and has provided your child with a username/password to access our educational content. Because your child may be under the age of 13, federal law requires that we attempt to notify you of the collection of this information. Please contact Discovery Education at any time regarding privacy questions or concerns, or to request to review what personally identifiable information has been provided by their school. You may also contact us at any time to request that we delete the personally identifiable information of your child and disallow any further access. CREATING CLASSES AND ASSIGNING CONTENT WITH KET ENCYCLOMEDIA

After logging into KET EncycloMedia, select My Classrooms from the top banner.
Click on Create a Classroom to get started.

Name your class Set the start and end dates

Select students from your school/district roster and/or add new students.

Review your class. Create duplicate classrooms if necessary (e.g. different subjects for elementary classrooms, separate classrooms for Reading and Writing in Language Arts blocks, specialized populations for integrated classes, etc.)

Select My Builder Tools to create and assign Assignments, Writing Prompts, Quizzes, and assessments to entire classes or to specific students.

Assignments, Quizzes, and Writing Prompts can be assigned to individual students or classes.

Using the Assignment Code
Teachers can provide students the Assignment Code if they do not have a DE user account.

Students log into Discovery Education to view assigned content, track progress on completed assignments and assessments, and access bookmarked content through My Content. New Message for Students: If you are 13 years old or younger do not use your actual name. Ask your teacher for a screen name to use. Students who do not have a KET EncycloMedia account can access Assignments, Writing Prompts, and Quizzes with the activity code.

Quizzes, Writing Prompts, and Assignments can also be assigned from within My Content.

Assign any media asset to entire classes or to specific students by selecting Classroom/Students, selecting a class and/or students, and setting assigned and due dates.

DISTRICT-WIDE AND SCHOOL-WIDE CREATION OF STUDENT ACCOUNTS

Account Level KET EncycloMedia Administrators can go to their My Admin page to import students and manage student account access and configuration.

Admins can download step-by-step instructions for formatting the data and uploading the spreadsheets.
