How can I cope with funny feelings? How can I ask for help if I need it ?

Our learning journey Today we will be thinking about when we feel safe and also about a feeling called anxiety and thinking about how to cope with this feeling and ask for help if we need it.

How can we keep each other feeling safe and valued in these lessons?

When do you feel safe? Seeing your friends in the playground on a Monday morning? Seeing your teacher at the classroom door? Cuddling your pet? Sharing stories at bedtime? Can you think of any more examples?

Today we will be learning about a feeling called: anxiety which can make some people feel unsafe Can you clarify this feeling word? Can you think of any examples of when a year 4 child might feel like this?

Flo and the Funny Feelings
We are going to listen to a story where the main character, a child called Flo, describes some safe and happy feelings when she has movie and cake Fridays with her mum. Also in the story she has some anxious feelings when her mum is ill. At first she struggles to cope with these feelings. Her mum gets better at the end of the story. Listen carefully to the story.

Think about your first thoughts about the story. What did you like /didn't like? Can you give a reason? Do you have any questions about the story?

In pairs: tell each other, in one sentence, what the story is about. Can we re-tell the story? What happened in the beginning, the middle and the end?

Suddenly Flo had a funny feeling in her tummy. She felt her chest tighten and her head became dizzy.

How could these sayings help us?
After Flo talked to her mum about her anxious feelings...she hugged her Mum tight, Flo felt the funny feelings melt away just that little bit more, and as she sat back on the sofa, she gave her Mum a smile.

Asking for help This time, Flo didn’t reply with her usual ‘I’m fine’. Instead she took a deep breath and told her Mum exactly how she’d been feeling. In the story Flo found it hard to ask for help when her friends, teacher and family noticed something seemed to be troubling her. Can you think of some sentence starts that might help someone if they felt anxious like Flo?
