1. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system
The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Renin produced by the kidney hydrolyzes angiotensinogen secreted by the liver into a decapeptide, angiotensin I. Under the effects of a converting enzyme in the lungs, angiotensin I is transformed into an octapeptide, angiotensin II. In itself, angiotensin II has vasoconstrictive properties, but it also binds to a membrane receptor of the cells of the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex in order to activate the secretion of aldosterone.
