3
Draw a simple sketch and label
4
Renal failure = A condition in which the kidneys lose the ability to remove waste and fluids
6
Nephron* Functional unit of urinary system
Function = regulate the concentration of water and soluble substances (salts) by ... Filtering the blood Reabsorbing what is needed Excreting the rest as urine
7
Nephron & Diffusion* Water and salts diffuse in and out of the nephron, from high concentration to low concentration
8
Journey Through the Nephron

9
Urinary System* Function = to filter blood and expel wastes (as urine)
Functional unit = nephron Main organ = kidney
10
Urinary & Circulatory? How do they relate??
The circulatory pumps the blood around the body, which gets filtered by the kidneys of the urinary system
11
Circulatory & Respiratory?
How do they relate? The blood needs to transport oxygen, which it receives from the lungs after you breathe in Blood needs to export carbon dioxide, which you release when you breathe out
12
Set up your journal as follows…
Exercise Activity! Set up your journal as follows…
13
Journal Notes Is your “Exercise Activity” chart set up??
Diffusion Across Alveoli Exercise Activity Before (Resting) After (Post-exercise) Pulse Rate: ______ beats/min Breathing Rate: ______ breaths/min Color change time: _____ sec Description: _________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________
14
Resting Pulse Rate Bring up timer While sitting in seats, find pulse.
Will time for 30 seconds and you will count the beats.
15
Journal Notes Multiple x2 and record beats/min
Diffusion Across Alveoli Exercise Activity Before (Resting) After (Post-exercise) Pulse Rate: ______ beats/min Breathing Rate: ______ breaths/min Color change time: _____ sec Description: _________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________

Group Activity: Exercise pt 1
Choose a partner. You will switch off. Staying safe within the room, exercise as harshly as possible for 2 minutes. Your partner will count your heart beats (stethoscope) while you count your breaths for 30 seconds, record data When you hear the alarm, quickly sit down and find your pulse so we can get accurate data
19
Record Breathing & Heart Rate in journal!
Switch partners! Repeat steps.
20
Group Activity: Exercise pt 2
BTB Demo 4 Volunteers (2 male, 2 female) from Round 1 Breathing regularly, you will each EXHALE ONLY into the tube (do not blow out bubbles) 4 volunteers will time how long it takes to turn the color from blue to yellow Average the two times of male & female
21
Journal Notes Record average time (in seconds) in “Before” box
Diffusion Across Alveoli Exercise Activity Before (Resting) After (Post-exercise) Pulse Rate: ______ beats/min Breathing Rate: ______ breaths/min Color change time: _____ sec Description: _________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________
22
Run Run Run! Run for 2 minutes.
Then immediately when you return, exhale only into the tube Timers will time how long it takes them to turn the color; take an average
23
Emphysema Experience Everyone run IN PLACE really FAST for 2 minutes
Then when you come back to your seat, cover your nose and breathe only through the straw How does it feel? Thinking about gas exchange, what is or isn’t happening?
24
Analysis What does your data show you?
How did the breathing/beating change after exercise? Why is that happening? Think-Pair-Share
