1 Jaron Silas The Human Heart

2 Parts of the Heart Superior Vena Cava Inferior Vana Cava Right Atrium
Tricuspid Valve Right Ventricle Pulmonary Valve Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Veins Left Atrium Mitral Valve Left Ventricle Aortic Valve Aorta

3 Superior Vena Cava The Superior Vena Cava is the first step in how the heart works. It gets blood from the upper body and brings it to the heart.

4 Inferior Vena Cava It is also part of the first step.
But instead it gets the blood from the lower body and brings it to the heart.

5 Right Atrium The right atrium receives the blood from the Inferior and Superior Vena Cava. It pumps the blood into the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve.

6 Tricuspid Valve Hangs between the right atrium and right ventricle.
It opens to allow blood through to the right ventricle. Then closes when the blood is inside it.

7 Right Ventricle Receives blood from the right atrium sends it to the pulmonary artery through the pulmonary valve.

8 Pulmonary Valve Hangs out between the pulmonary artery and right ventricle. It opens so that blood from the right ventricle can go to the pulmonary artery.

9 Pulmonary Artery Receives blood from the right ventricle through the pulmonary valve and takes the blood to the lungs so that they may become oxygenated.

10 Pulmonary Veins Gets oxygenated blood back from the lungs and send the blood to the left atrium.

11 Left Atrium Takes the oxygenated blood to the left ventricle through the mitral valve.

12 Mitral Valve Is between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
It opens to allow the blood into the left ventricle.

13 Left Ventricle Receives blood from the left atrium.
Sends the blood to the aorta through the aortic valve.

14 Aortic Valve Sits between the aorta and left ventricle.
Blood from the left ventricle goes through it to the aorta.

15 The aorta The aorta is the main blood transporter in the heart.
It gets blood from the left ventricle and returns it back into the body.

16 Heart Disease Coronary artery disease Hypertension Atherosclerosis
Heart attack Heart failure

17 Hypertension This is when your blood pressure is to high. The pressure is above 120 while the heart is pumping (systolic) and above 80 when the heart is resting(diastolic). Symptoms include dizziness headache and fainting.

18 Coronary artery disease
The most common type of heart disease. This disease is caused when the arteries narrow and harden due to cholesterol (fatty build up).

19 Arrhythmias This disease occurs when there is a problem with the rate and rhythm of the heart. Brachycardia is when the heart beats are under 60bpm. Tachycardia is when the hearts beats are over 100bpm.

20 Heart attack This occurs when the blood supply to the heart is temporarily cut off. Symptoms include angina (chestpain), nausea, shortness of breathe, sweating and vomiting.

21 Heart failure Happens when the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently. Causes of heart failure would be heart attack and hypertension.

22 Healthy decisions Exercise Eat healthy Maintain a healthy weight
Don’t smoke Reduce stress

23 Exercise When you exercise it helps maintain a balanced blood pressure. And it improves circulation. It is recommended that everyone get 30 minutes of exercise daily. And it helps maintain a healthy weight.

24 Eat healthy Eating a healthy diet also helps maintain a stable weight.
A healthy diet means consuming a good quantity of foods from all food groups.

25 Don’t smoke Nearly 20% of all deaths of heart disease in Americans are linked to cigarette smoking. Smoking is a huge cause of coronary artery disease.

26 Why I Chose The Heart I chose to do my project on the heart because I wanted to proceed in a medical career. I dream of learning everything there is to know about the human body and this is just the first step for me.
