2 Why Nutrition & Fitness Education?
1 in 3 American kids and teens is overweight or obese. The prevalence of obesity in children more than tripled over the past four decades.1 97% of elementary school teachers believe nutrition education is important.3 96% of elementary schools are unable to provide daily physical education. 4 There are strong research ties between physical health & academic success.2 (1) American Heart Association (2011), (2) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2014) , (3) Perera et al (2015) , (4) White House Task Force on Child Obesity (2010)

3 The Student Journey Taking a “learning by doing” approach, students help a friendly health monster, Chester, navigate food and fitness decisions throughout the day. From filling a plate with healthy meals to finding ways to boost Chester’s flexibility, strength, and endurance, students model positive health outcomes they can readily take back to their own lives.

4 Healthier Me Wellness Fundamentals for Elementary School At-a-Glance
Healthy lifestyles start early, when our eating habits and fitness routines are just forming. This course turns familiar scenarios into teachable moments to build healthy behaviors students can use throughout their lives. From building a balanced plate to identifying the activities that will improve their endurance, students will learn to become a Healthier Me. Course Highlights Interactive scenarios to model and reinforce healthy behaviors Rich illustration and character animations to keep learners engaged Real-world food and fitness choices Course Topics Making healthy decisions Eating well-balanced meals Nutritional properties of foods Benefits of physical activity Grade Level: 1st - 4th Course Length: 20 – 25 minutes Aligns with National Health Education Standards (NHES), USDA Dietary Guidelines
