1 SamePage helping new teachers cope with the unexpected
Halsted M. Larsson and Sam Ogami Stanford University School of Education Program In Learning, Design, and Technology July 2006

2 OVERVIEW Learning Problem Design Process & Prototyping
Product Features

3 LEARNING PROBLEM Teachers must balance many situational factors when planning and teaching lessons Addressing curricular requirements and standards Incorporating activities Handling unexpected technology difficulties or interruptions Managing a dynamic classroom of pupils with diverse learning needs

4 LEARNING SOLUTION A tool to help teachers plan, implement, and reflect on their lesson plans

5 Design Process: NEED FINDING
Interviewed current teachers and conducted a literature review The need to incorporate students with exceptional learning needs can make the experience of a new teacher especially difficult Interview with a Boston public high school teacher acknowledged the frustration of teaching in a school where sixty or so languages are spoken

6 Design Process: THEORY

7 Design Process: THEORY
Basic model draws from Wiggins and McTighe’s backwards design Design was guided the CAST principles of Universal Design for Learning Formative Feedback / Self Assessment

8 Design Process: PROTOTYPING
Developed several prototypes: Software program Physical device We tested them with pre-service teachers from the Stanford University School of Education STEP Program

9 Prototypes

10 Design process: PROTOTYPING FINDINGS
Teachers greatly valued: The ability to incorporate material into their lesson that they were unable to cover in past lessons Mobile device that doesn’t force them to stay behind a desk or computer Easy to use quickly (no more than 5 seconds to manipulate) Does not display schedule to students

11 SAMEPAGE Lesson Planner Agenda Tracker Review Helper

12 Product Features: LESSON PLANNER
Goal Oriented Planning Identification of lesson goals before activities Activity Manager Allows instructor to visually drag and drop activities onto their lesson goals Easy Advice Provides instructor feedback on their lesson plan along the process of creating it

13 Product Features: AGENDA TRACKER
On-the-fly Scheduling Instructor can change a lesson’s timeline while they are teaching the lesson Handheld Interface Instructor easily track and adjust their agenda with a handheld device Detailed Logging Advancing the lesson to substituting a different activity is recorded for easy reflection and for use in planning future lessons

14 Product Features: REVIEW HELPER
Planned vs Used Time View lesson plan side-by-side with how that lesson actually went View time estimates next to how much time each activity actually took Lesson Comparison View lessons to see what factors might be at play in this particular environment Sharing Notes Share lesson plans with other teachers
