Large-scale private and hosted clouds, on the other hand, typically prefer the flexibility to scale compute and storage independently. Windows Server software-defined storage enables both models for customer flexibility with its Storage Spaces Direct feature. -The disaggregated scenario separates Hyper-V servers from the Storage Spaces Direct servers, enabling scaling of compute separate from storage. -In the hyper-converged scenario shown here, the Hyper-V (compute) and Storage Spaces Direct (storage) components reside on the same cluster to enable simultaneous scaling. Talking points: Microsoft’s on-premises strategy is for a converged / disaggregated architecture running Hyper-V over SMB.
