3 States of Matter Solid, liquid, and gas
2
What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Can be classified as a solid, liquid, or gas Which category is each object in?
3
Science Notebook Solid Liquid Gas
Let’s set up our science notebook! Title the page, 3 States of Matter Turn your notebook horizontally and make 3 columns Label the columns, solid, liquid, gas Under each column, you will take notes Solid Liquid Gas
4
Solids Made up of tiny particles called molecules
Tightly packed together Have a definite shape and volume Molecules can move or vibrate, but stay in place
5
Solids What other solids can you think of?
In your science notebook under the “solids” column, list 3 solids and draw a quick picture.
6
Liquids Have a definite volume Take the shape of their container
Molecules are very close together, but can flow around each other
7
Liquids If you pour water from the first container into the second container, the amount of water stays the same, but the water will change its shape.
8
Liquids What other liquids can you think of?
In your science notebook under the “liquids” column, list 3 liquids and draw a quick picture.
9
Gases Gas has very high energy
The molecules move in all directions and are very far apart Take the shape of a closed container or spread out to fill the space they are in. Ex: air in the room fills up the classroom Do not have definite shape or volume
10
Gases What other gases can you think of? Think hard….this is a tricky one!! In your science notebook under the “gas” column, list 3 gases and draw a quick picture.
11
How do these 3 pictures differ?
