1. What Half of the Brain Do Girls Use the Most?

2. Problem
I want to know what half of the brain girls use more often, the left or right.

3. Introduction
Are you left or right handed? Many of the things you are good at depend on your brain and how it functions. Since each brain is uniquely designed, it has a different effect on how the brain and body work together. For example, some people are ambidextrous (able to use both hands equally) while others tend to use the same hand more often then the other.

5. Hypothesis
I predict that there are going to be more people who use the left half of their brain the most because it seems like the majority of girls in my class are right handed.

6. Materials Computer with Internet connection Pencils Paper and scissors
Ball
Stairs
a coin
Paper towel tube (to look through and listen to)
Piece of paper or cardboard with a small hole
several volunteers (girls tend to focus better)

7. Procedure
First, I ask the volunteer to write their name on a piece of paper and to cut it out, and then I have them drop a ball and catch it. This is the hand dominance test (As they do this, I record the data on a spreadsheet).
Next I have them kick a ball, step up on a block, and step on their name that they wrote on the paper. This is the foot dominance test. I then record which foot they use for each activity.
After the foot test, I give them a cardboard tube and ask them to look through it at a distant object. Then I ask them to look through a piece of paper with a hole cut out at the same object. This is the eye dominance test.
The ear dominance test is next and it involves having the volunteer listen to the tube and listening to a wall.
After everyone has gone through the tests, I add up all the recorded data and get a result.

9. Conclusion
My hypothesis was correct; there were more girls in my class who were right-handed then left-handed. This may have been because most of the testers are visual learners and respond to demonstrated instructions better then verbal instructions (spoken).

10. Major Observations
The girls seemed a little bit confused at first with the experiment, but began to ease up after I told them what the experiment was about.
At the very beginning, most of them seemed a bit more concerned about how they should write and cut their name out then the overall experiment.

11. Possible Applications
This test can be used to help teachers determine how they layout their tests for certain students. For example, every student in one class could be doing a great job on the homework assignments, but when it comes to the final tests, 5 of the students fail. This experiment will help determine what half of the brain they use, thus determining if they are visual learners that work better with multiple choice questions or open-ended questions.

12. Possible Causes of Error
After I finished testing one person, I’d tell them what my project was about and ask them to not tell anyone else because it might effect how that person reacts to the test later on. Some might have accidently told another girl though because they forgot and that may have affected how they tested later on.
