URINARY SYSTEM
2
FUNCTION OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
The main function is to filter waste and extra fluid from the blood
3
Urine Urine – liquid waste excreted from the body through the process of urination Urine consists of water and body wastes that contain nitrogen. If these wastes stay in the body they can become toxic.
4
KIDNEY Description Fist sized Bean-shaped Located in the lower back
5
KIDNEY Function Filters blood Removes liquid wastes
6
BLADDER Description Smooth muscle tissue Located in the pelvic region
7
BLADDER Function Temporary storage for urine
8
URETERS Description Tubes that connect kidney to bladder
9
URETERS Function Transports urine from kidneys to bladder
10
URETHRA Description Tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the body
11
URETHRA Function Releases the urine
12
URINARY SYSTEM STRUCTURES
13
RENAL ARTERY Description
Tube that carries the blood away from the heart to the kidney Arteries = Away from heart
14
RENAL ARTERY Function Takes blood to be filtered in kidney
15
RENAL VEIN Description
Tube that carries blood away from the kidneys into the heart Vein = Into heart
16
RENAL VEIN Function Drains the deoxygenated blood from kidney to the heart (Vena Cava)
18
EXCRETION The process that collects and removes harmful or useless substances from the blood
19
ORGANS OF EXCRETION Kidney – filters liquid waste out of the blood
Liver – detoxifies blood, excretes bile, forms urea Liver produces urea as a waste product of the digestion of protein Kidneys transfer urea from the blood to the urine
20
ORGANS OF EXCRETION Lungs – filters carbon dioxide
Skin – filters water to cool the body
21
WASTE PRODUCTS PRODUCED BY THE BODY
Water Salts Urea – nitrogen waste that is filtered out of the blood and excreted in the urine Carbon Dioxide
22
Vena Cava Aorta Adrenal Gland Renal Artery Renal Vein Kidney Ureter
Bladder Urethra Urinary Urine Salts Ureter Urinary Bladder Urethra
23
DO NOW Objective: Review all the organs and parts that play a role in the Urinary System and the functions for each Identify healthy behaviors and disorders of the Urinary System Answer the following questions: What is the main function of the Urinary system? What acts as a temporary storage for urine? What is the function of the renal artery? What is tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the body? What waste products make up your urine?
24
Healthy Behaviors & Problems of the Urinary System
Health behaviors for good urinary health: Drink enough water at least 8 oz. of H20 Eat a balanced diet Practice good hygiene Have regular checkups
25
Problems of the Urinary System
Cystitis – inflammation of the bladder, caused by a bacterial infection Signs/Symptoms include: Burning during urination Frequent urination Fever Blood in urine Treatment: antibiotics
27
Problems continued Treatment: antibiotics
Urethritis – inflammation of the urethra caused by a bacterial infection Signs/Symptoms include: Burning during urination Frequent urination Fever Blood in urine Treatment: antibiotics
28
Problems with the kidneys
Kidney Stones – form when salts in the urine crystalize into a solid stone, usually containing some calcium. Smaller stones can pass regularly Bigger stones need treatment Treatment: Sound waves Laser surgery Medications Kidney transplant
30
Problems continued Kidney failure – kidneys progressively lose their ability to function Caused by: Decreased blood supply to the kidneys Infection/Inflammation of the kidneys Kidney stones
31
Kidney Failure continued
Signs/Symptoms include: Weakness Shortness of breath Inability to clear waste products from body Treatments include: Dialysis A process for removing waste and excess water from the blood Used primarily as an artificial replacement for lost kidney function Kidney transplant
32
DID YOU KNOW? The Urinary System filters about 50 gallons of blood and produces 1-2 quarts of urine per day

REVIEW What is the function of the kidney?
What are the Ureters responsible for? What is the Urethra responsible for? What is the difference between the renal artery and the renal vein? What is excretion? What organs excrete wastes? What is the difference between cystitis and urethritis? How can kidney stones be treated? What is dialysis?
