A Quick Visit to the Media Center Web page
8
Fixed/Flexible Schedule for Students
Lower grades (K-2) visit once per week at a specified time Upper grades (3-5) visit based on class and curriculum needs Promotes collaboration between teacher and media specialist to implement information skills with classroom curriculum
9
Determining Collection Needs
What do the teachers need? Example: 4th graders study rocks & minerals so she orders books for this grade level and teaches students how to do research on this topic.
10
Other Methods for Determining Collection Needs
Teacher suggestion box Feedback from students Suggestions from special subject teachers (music, art, etc.) Browsing bookstores Past use of materials Demographics of the student population (percent of gifted students, etc.)
11
Media Center Funding From CMS: $2,400 per year for materials (about $3 per child) Also from CMS: $300 per year for periodicals Core collection of books from Media Services (does not come out of her $$) Donations (if they meet collection guidelines) From the PTA: about $6,500 per year used mostly for books
12
Selection Tools School Library Journal reviews
Follett’s selection tools Capstone Press catalog Mackin (book jobber for K-12 media centers)
13
Favorite Vendor Bound to Stay Bound Books because:
Materials last longer Stand up to heavy use and misuse by students Prices are comparable to other vendors, but quality is better.
14
Automation & Cataloging Facts
Most of the materials are cataloged when they arrive from Media Services She does a small amount of copy cataloging Automation system is Horizon Information Portal by Dynix Generates reports to justify requests for dollars and expenditures and for collection assessment (collection is still quite new!)
15
Weeding Policy No policy yet because school and collection is so new
Discards damaged books as they cross the desk Does some small repairs like gluing spines Believes that weeding will be more difficult to justify to parents than to the school administration
16
Preservation Most important element of preservation is teaching the students the proper care and handling of books. Uses furniture polish and alcohol-free baby wipes to clean materials.
17
Favorite Part of the Job
Variety of daily tasks Principal lets her use the flex scheduling with older students Watching the students grow and develop their research skills
18
Challenges Differing personalities and expectations of the teachers
Media center time is not “break” time for the teachers She expects to work collaboratively with the teachers to meet the information literacy needs of the students Fortunately, Dr. Gorman views the media center as a place for students to develop their thinking skills
19
And changing technology is happening really fast!
Vision of the Future Increased need to be technologically literate! Difficult because schools do not get new technology in a timely manner. And changing technology is happening really fast!
