Paraphrase The word ‘paraphrase’ can be separated into two parts: ‘para-‘ means nearly, similar, beside. And a ‘phrase’ is a group of words that make sense.

To paraphrase a sentence is to use different words to express the same idea.
Two of the techniques used in paraphrasing involve changing some of the words to definitions, or to synonyms. These techniques do not usually require changing the structure of the sentence, but they do require some understanding of the meaning of the sentence.

Original: The dinosaurs became extinct. Paraphrase:
The dinosaurs died out. We can create paraphrases by using synonyms and/or definitions. (synonym = different word with similar meaning) Original: My car needs gasoline (synonyms ) My automobile needs fuel. My wheels need gas. My ride’s needing to feel the juice.

My cat has a lot of fun playing with a ball of wool.
(synonyms ) My cat has a lot of fun playing with a ball of wool. My cat really enjoys frolicking with a ball of wool. furry sphere My cat loves cavorting with its favorite toy.

Some examples of paraphrasing with definitions:
Original: A college student usually has homework to do. A person going to college typically has to study at home. People taking college courses usually have assignments to do. Original: Alcoholics drink more, but enjoy it less than social drinkers. A person who is addicted to alcohol consumes more but gets less pleasure than a person who drinks just to be sociable. People who really need to drink have a high level of intake but a lower level of satisfaction than people who can take it or leave it.

Paraphrase the following sentences by replacing the underlined words with:
Definition The way to a male’s heart is through his tummy. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. 2. A flying animal in the hand is as valuable as two in the bush. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. 3. There's a fool with money born every sixty seconds. There's a sucker born every minute. 4. To hell with the torpedoes, full speed forward. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. 5. A rolling rock collects no moss. A rolling stone gathers no moss.

Synonyms A penny saved is a penny earned.
A penny kept is a penny made. Valuable gifts often come in small packages. Valuable offerings often come in tiny packages. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. You can't teach an elderly dog new actions. A boy's best friend is his dog. A kid's best friend is his canine. A fool and his money are soon parted. A fool and his readies are soon split.

Now some more difficult paraphrasing
Her life spanned years of incredible change for women. She lived through an era of liberating reform for women. Giraffes like Acacia leaves and hay and they can consume 75 pounds of food a day. A giraffe can eat up to 75 pounds of Acacia leaves and hay everyday. Any trip to Italy should include a visit to Tuscany to sample their exquisite wines. Be sure to include a Tuscan wine-tasting experience when visiting Italy. Police have arrested a 28-year-old man who they say broke into shop in Austin, Texas and stole a couple of sausages and then fell asleep. A 28-year-old man in Austin, Texas didn’t break into a shop and run, like most criminals. Instead, he took several sausages then simply fell asleep inside the shop.
