Defining Sexuality Sexuality includes our gender identity (the core sense that we are female or male). Sexuality includes gender role (the idea of how we should behave because we are a female or male).

Sexuality includes our sexual orientation (heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual). “Sexuality is expressed in the way we speak, smile, stand, sit, dress, dance, laugh, and cry.”

Three Sex Hormones Testosterone, Estrogen, and Progesterone
They are found in everyone but in different proportions and with unique functions.

Testosterone-Male Sex Homorne
In males, testosterone is produced in the testicles It helps build muscle tone, It increases energy, It contributes to a healthy libido, and aids in sperm production. Levels decline with age and with high stress in the body.

Effects of higher Testosterone in women
It can lead to acne, unwanted hair on the face and body, polycystic ovaries with resulting interference of ovulation, aggression. Increased sexual drive

Estrogen-Female Sex Hormone
In women-It is made in ovaries and adrenal glands Promotes feminine characteristics/sexuality Prevents bone loss

Effects of higher Estrogen in men
Fatigue Loss of muscle tone Weight gain Decreased libido Problems with the prostate Increased risk of heart disease

Progesterone It maintains balance between Testosterone and Estrogen
Calms the body and mind Promotes restful sleep Protects against breast and uterine cancer

"Sex is not between the legs but between the EARS" Hypothalamus-controls physical arousal-stimulate the release of testosterone Amygdala-regulates emotions and pleasurable experiences,e.g. Orgasm

Types of Sexual Disorders (Paraphilias)
Exhibitionism (urge or behaviour to expose one’s genitalia to unsuspecting person Fetishism (use of nonsexual/nonliving objects to gain sexual pleasure, e.g. shoes) Frotteurism (urge of touching/rubbing against a non-consenting person)

Masochism (urge of wanting to be humiliated or beaten or made to suffer Sadism (urge involving acts in which pain or humiliation of the victim is sexually exciting Voyeurism (urge to observe/watch an unsuspecting person who is naked

Exclusive Pedophile-only attracted to children Nonexclusive Pedophile- attracted to adults and children Most pedophiles are part of the nonexclusive group

Homosexual pedophile-attracted to only male children -usually prefer boys between 10 & 13 years Heterosexual pedophile-attracted to only female children -usually prefer girls between ages of 8 and 10

Bisexual pedophile-attracted to both young boys & girls Incest pedophile-limited to family members Infantophiles –individuals who interested in children younger than 5 years. Exhibitionist Pedophile- exposing himself

Voyeurist Pedophile-looking at a naked child Frotteurist Pedophile-rubbing their genitalia against the child Computer-based pedophile-the stalkers, the cruisers (chatrooms), the masturbators, the networkers/swappers.

Gaining access to children
Intentionally place themselves in a position where they can meet children Look for unsupervised opportunities with children e.g. babysitting, doing volunteer work, coaching sports, etc.

Pedophiles may target certain type of families and children E.g. lower education, absenteeism from home, divorced parents, emotionally needy or unhappy children.

Defense mechanisms used by Pedophiles
Denial- “is it wrong to give a child a hug?” Minimization- “it only happened once” Justification- “I am a boy lover, not a child molester” Fabrication- ‘activities were meant for a research project’.

Pedophile’s personality traits
Pedophiles generally experience - feelings of inferiority - isolation or loneliness - low self-esteem, shy and introverted - internal dysphoria - emotional immaturity - poor interpersonal interaction skills - elevated anger or hostility N

Treatment Medication- to lower sexual drive
Medication doesn’t decrease psychological sexual fantasies. Psychotherapy- prognosis is very poor Most pedophiles end up in jail

Break the silence- start the conversations Conduct rallies and workshops Preaching- must be young in mind and contemporary Focus on our mission imperatives especially Evangelism, Justice and Human development/empowerment.
