How to Estimate Percent
1) Write the equation, using the % x the amount. Round the numbers to the nearest whole. 2) Convert the % to a decimal and multiply. Round to the nearest cent. 3) Check answer for reasonableness. 9% of $19.99 = 10% x 20 = .1 x 20 = $2 If a sale, $2 off. If tax, add $2.

Other Examples 28% of 71 = 30% x 70 = .30 x 70 = 21.00 28% of 71
= 28% of 71 82% of 202

Try It! 49% of 49 = .5 x 50 = 25.0 2) 11% of 38 =.10 x 40 = 4.00 3) 9% of $59.97 =.10 x $60 =$6.00 4) 22% of 78 = .20 x 80 = 16.00 5) 71% of $17.89 =.70 x $20 =$14.00 6) 20% of 36 =.2 x 40 = 8.0 49% of 49 11% of 38 9% of $59.97 22% of 78 71% of $17.89 20% of 36

Objective Review To estimate percents of numbers between 0% and 100% using multiples of 10% or fractions. Why? You now know find quick sales prices and/or discount prices. One way to estimate with percents is to round the percent and the number to the nearest 10. Then multiply the rounded values to find the estimate.
