1 Stirling High School Numeracy Faculty
Where every pupil counts.

2 Why study Mathematics and Numeracy
To face the challenges of the 21st century, each young person needs to have confidence in using mathematical skills, and Scotland needs both specialist mathematicians and a highly numerate population. Building the Curriculum 1

5 Empty Number Line Use ? Animate. - Don’t always get pupils to draw. But .. when pupils describe a strategy (perhaps during a number talk) this is what we draw to help others to visualise the strategy. “High achieving students engage in flexible thinking when they work with numbers, decomposing and recomposing them.” Gray and Tall (1994) 5

11 Literacy Research Memory Skill Practice - Core Stretch!
Give an example of when you add, subtract, multiply and divide in real life. Add – total, altogether, sum, increase Subtract – take away, how much more, difference, decrease Multiply – product, times Divide – share, goes into, how many times Learn all the different words that mean add, subtract, multiply and divide. Investigate different ways to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Skill Practice - Core Stretch! (a) (b) – (c) 574 x 3 (d) 796 ÷ 4 Amber shares £32 between her and 3 other friends.
