Bellringer Define robber baron Give 2 tactics that they used
What was the theory that supported their actions?

Agenda BR Review Immigrants Political Cartoons

Farmers Rejoice! While the government was LAISSEZ FAIRE, they did create the Interstate Commerce Commission to REGULATE the RAILROADS so that they couldn’t charge ridiculous rates to farmers

Bellringer Get out your homework!
What are 3 differences between OLD and NEW immigrants?

Immigration and Urbanization

Who’s Afraid… Many Americans feared that the waves of immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe, and from Asia, posed a threat to American jobs and way of life

Old vs. New

Bellringer Identify 2 differences between OLD and NEW immigrants and explain why we discriminated against NEW immigrants.

Bellringer What are 2 push and 2 pull factors that impacted immigration?

Agenda BR Review Finish immigration Unions

Push and Pull Many immigrants came to the US because of a variety of reasons. List 2 push factors and 2 pull factors. Push: immigrants couldn’t practice their religion, were forced to serve in the military, the economy was bad (had low paying jobs). These factors pushed them out of their country. Pull: immigrants wanted to find better jobs and religious and political freedoms, wanted more opportunities. These factors pulled them to America.

Welcome! When European immigrants arrived on the East Coast in America they went through Ellis Island. When Asian immigrants arrived on the West Coast they went through Angel Island. Explain what happened here: They were asked questions, given physicals to determine if they were healthy. If they weren’t, they were either sent back to Europe or put into quarantine.

Godfather

Maybe Not… Once in America, immigrants had a hard time finding places to live because everything was overcrowded. Their jobs were long, dangerous, and didn’t pay well, and they faced diseases and discrimination.

the city Why did Americans move to the cities?
Immigrants settled in cities mainly because that is where more job opportunities were. These factory jobs didn’t require an education or a high understanding of the English language. Cities also had places to live and culture- theatres, sports, bars, dancing, department stores. Major cities that grew immigrant crowds were New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

So High Tech! List 5 new technologies cities developed to support such a huge population. electric streetlights electric trolleys (cities could spread out and suburbs developed) skyscrapers (and elevators) subways sewers underground pipes

Urban Define urban, suburban, and rural and who lives in each region. Explain what urbanization is then. Urban- city (poor). Urbanization is the growth of cities caused by industrialism and immigration. Cities- large, overcrowded, packed in, lots of people, noise, culture

Suburban Suburban- residential areas surrounding the city (between urban and rural) (wealthy/middle class- people who could afford to commute) More land, developments, cookie cutter

Rural Rural- farmland (farmers)
Lots of open land, space, quiet, spread out

Cribs Tenements were the cramped apartments immigrants were forced to live in. Describe conditions: They are built quickly and cheaply. They don’t have heat, running water, bathrooms, etc. It was a slum. Rent was even high here, so it was overcrowded. People often slept in stairways. Disease was able to spread quickly since it wasn’t sanitary.

Location Location Location
The rent was high in tenements though…why? Demand was high- everyone wanted a place to live. Supply was low (there wasn’t enough) so landlords could charge high rates (prices went up) and immigrants had to pay them forcing them to be overcrowded.

Lots of Opportunities As industries developed, they generated a demand for skilled white collar workers with jobs like engineers, accountants, attorneys, managers, salesclerks, and advertisers. They created the middle class. Blue collar are people with jobs that do the “dirty work” and actually produce a product. During this time many Americans also went to colleges- even women! More Americans learned how to read and earned high school diplomas.

Delicious! Why is America called a “melting pot”?
America is called the melting pot because there were so many different backgrounds and cultures coming into America and they were all blending together. America is the nation of immigrants. Is there really a true American? We are a combination of a variety of cultures.

Review What does assimilate/Americanize mean? Why did immigrants need to do this? Assimilate means to adopt the new culture. Americanize means to make others American. We wanted these new immigrants to be more American- speak English, dress, act, talk, worship, work like us. Don’t be different. Many immigrants needed to Americanize so they could get jobs.

Land of Opportunity? **Nativism: belief that America should be for Americans and exclude new immigrants. See anything ironic about this? **Eugenics: practice to control breeding/reproduction to create a superior race State legislatures legalized sterilization for criminals and the disabled so they couldn’t have children since they were weak or inferior Think Social Darwinism or Hitler
