1 Sleep Quality Assessed by Questionnaires Pre- and Postoperatively in Patients with Nasal Polyposis
Maria Värendh1, Arne Johannisson2, Harald Hrubros-Strøm3, Morgan Andersson1 Conclusion: Patients with nasal polyposis suffer from symptoms related to poor quality of sleep. Nasal surgery improved symptoms of sleep deprivation. A non-significant improvement of daytime sleepiness after surgery of nasal polyposis was shown. Introduction: Nasal polyposis reduce nasal patency and has a great impact on quality of life. However, to what extent sleep quality is disturbed and if certain questions/questionnaires can catch this impact is not investigated. Objectives of the study were to examine consequences of poor sleep quality in relation to nasal symptoms using sleep questionnaires in patients with nasal polyposis before and three months after endoscopic sinus surgery. The study was approved by the local ethical committee. Methods: We examined 43 subjects (mean age: 52 years, range: years, 12 females) with pronounced nasal obstruction due to nasal polyposis with sleep questionnaires prior to FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) and three months later. BNSQ, ESS, and SNOT-22 were used. BNSQ also was calculated as a sum. Imputations were made on missing data. Values in the results are given as mean and (SD). Results: Surgery reduced the impact of nasal symptoms on sleep: SNOT-22 score decreased from 46.9 pts. to 31.9 pts. (19.42) (p<0.001) after surgery. The question: Lack of good night´s sleep was rated significantly better after surgery, which decreased from 2.52 pts. (1.64) to 1.45 pts. (1.5) (p<0.001). Before surgery 53% of the subjects responded “always” or “often” to the question in BNSQ ”I wake up with a dry mouth” which was reduced to 32.3% after surgery. Total ESS scores decreased from 7.6 pts. (4.5) to 6.7 pts. (3.7) : (p=0.07) three months after surgery. A decrease in nose symptoms gives a reduction in ESS in all patients under the line, shown in graph.   Questionnaires used: BNSQ: Basic Nordic Sleep Questionnaire ESS: Epworth Sleepiness Scale SNOT-22 : Sino-Nasal Outcome Test Institutions: 1) Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Skane University Hospital, Sweden, 2) Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science, Lund University, Sweden, and 3) Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Akershus University Hospital, Lørenskog, Norway Contact: Abstract ID Number: 0471 Poster Board ID Number: 198
