1 Segments of a Circle Unit 4

2 Segments in a Circle: Review
Radius – A segment in a circle that has one endpoint on the center of the circle and one endpoint on the edge of a the circle. Chord – A segment in a circle that has two endpoints on the edge of the circle. Diameter – A special type of chord (endpoints on the circle) that passes through the center of the circle. The longest distance measurable across the circle. Secant – A line that pass through the circle and intersects it at two points Tangent – A line that touches the circle only once and is perpendicular at the point of tangency.

3 Two Chords When two chords intersect inside a circle, the product of the segments of one chord equals the product of the segments of the other chord.

4 Two Chords: Find the value of x
Given: DI = 4, IE = 9, FI = x, IG = 6

5 Two Chords: Find the value of x

6 Two Secants When two secant segments are drawn to a circle from an external point, the product of one secant segment and its external segment equals the product of the other secant segment and its external segment. AM = Entire segment BM = Exterior portion of segment DM = Entire segment CM = Exterior portion of segment

7 Two Secants: Find the value of x

8 Two Secants: Find the value of x

9 One Secant and One Tangent
When a secant segment and a tangent are drawn to a circle from an external point, the product of the secant segment and its external segment is equal to the square of the tangent segment. AM = Entire segment BM = Exterior portion of segment CM = Tangent Line
