Colons and Semicolons What are some punctuation marks that we already know and use? How/when do we use them?
4
Colons and Semicolons Just like word choice, our choice of punctuation impacts how readers decipher our message. We now will have two new “tools” to help us The colon : The Semicolon ;
5
Two Kinds Read the two sentences from “Two Kinds” with your elbow partner and try to replace the colon and the semicolon with: A comma A period A question mark An exclamation point. Which one worked?
6
The Colon The Colon can take the place of commas.
We normally use them before we: Explain something List a few things Talk about a collection
7
The Semicolon The semicolon can replace a period. We use them when we:
Have TWO COMPLETE sentences These two sentences are closely related Want to show the close relation
