Shifts in Writing with the CCSS
Writing is treated as an equal partner to reading. The standards emphasize three types of writing – argument, informational, and narrative. The standards emphasize the writing process (standards 5 and 10). The standards call for a high level of student proficiency in writing and frequent engagement in the writing process.

Standard 10 Write routinely
Standard 10 calls for students to: write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) Write for shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two).

Emphasis on Writing Across all Disciplines and for Real Purposes
Students need to learn to use writing: As a way of offering and supporting opinions To demonstrate understanding of the subjects they are studying To convey real and imagined experiences and events

Navigating the Staircase of Complexity in Argument Writing
Opinion Writing – Standard 1 Read standard 1 across grade levels noting staircase of complexity (pages 19 & 20, 42 & 45) Skim student writing samples With colleagues, determine grade level standards represented in each student writing sample
