Case Study 1 Pre-assessment – stage 1 of the process
Needs help with family tree Asks you to comment on what she’s written about her chronology s you her papers You meet up and she divulges that they only finished IVF treatment in January What are the issues ? How far do you go in supporting ? What do you do about the IVF issue ? Role Play Volunteer ! Examples of active listening – how did you know the mentor was listening ? Examples of phrases that demonstrate coaching / ask rather than tell ? Any other bits/ phrases you liked ?

Case Study 2 Post Placement – 2 months in, 4 yr old girl
Paternal and maternal rejection, wanting to return to birth mother Challenging behaviour towards the Mum in particular No bonding happening, Mum is angry with the child and expresses dislike Sweet and compliant at school Mum and Dad at wits end – very critical of social worker, have given 48hrs notice to remove the child What are the issues ? How far do you go in supporting ? What do you do about the issue of the Mum disliking the child ? Role Play Volunteer ! Examples of active listening – how did you know the mentor was listening ? Case Study 3 Post-assessment – waiting for a match, has been waiting 2 months Getting very agitated and wants to complain about social worker not doing enough to find a match What are the issues ?
