New Right Charles Murray right wing of the political spectrum conservative – traditional, don’t like too much change Influenced the Conservative Party 1980s. Influenced Thatcher and policy
2
New Right: Family Pro nuclear family Heterosexual husband and wife
Why? Emotional and economic support Primary socialisation – norms and values – moral codes, education etc Believe in traditional gender roles because it divides the work equally and you have a solid home Believe in a man and a woman as the preferential partnership because children need a male and female role model
3
New Right: Family Why is the New Right anti diversity? Especially single parent families… Children lack two role models (of both genders) Lack of social control often leads to crime and deviance Blame the mass media (secondary socialisation) for inappropriate images and messages and think that the innocence of youth is affected The perspective argues that children will achieve less perhaps because of material and cultural deprivation If there is a single parent, it means that there is only one parent working so less money This is a problem because the single parent will have less time, less emotional and disciplinarian support Dislike the welfare state (benefits) because they think it encourages welfare dependency – so some families who are on welfare do work hard enough and set a good example to their children.
4
New Right: education Argue that single parent families can lead to education under achievement because of the lack of cultural, material and emotional support from the one parent Prefer the tripartite system ( ) – 11+ entry exam – highest achieving students would go to grammar school, 65% who failed would go to secondary moderns and remaining would go to technical schools – fair, competition, higher standards – meritocratic Not very keen on the comprehensive because they think it has led to declining standards They like private education because it offers people choice, lowers the cost for the tax payer and the standards are high The purpose of education is to encourage students to feel British and to drive up traditional standards – grammar, English literature, maths, sciences… The perspective dislikes ‘newer’ subjects such as psychology, sociology…
