Direct democracy Not practical with large populations Republic Representative democracy Smaller chosen group make laws & govern The people are ultimate source of power US has oldest republic in world Constitutional Monarchy Democracy with a hereditary ruler Great Britain & Japan

Competing parties & candidates Out of power party serves as watchdog Majority Rule Rousseau promoted idea late 1700’s Abide by what most people want Still respect rights of minority

8 Authoritarian Absolute Monarchy Dictatorship Hereditary ruler
Unlimited power & authority Not many left today Saudi Arabia & Qatar Dictatorship non-hereditary ruler Usually seizes power Rely on police & military to stay in power Limit freedoms of citizens Cuba, Iraq was, many poorer countries in Africa
