3. 1295 Edward I raises taxes Parliament established
Parl. voted on taxes and other reforms and laws

4. Mid-1300s House of Commons formed
Existence limited the power of the monarch & established the principle of representation

5. 1603 Stuarts take control of England James I clashed w/ Parliament
James ignored Parliament & tried to raise funds on his own, increasing anger in the nobility

6. 1628 Charles I needs money Charles agrees to sign Petition of Right
He later ignores the document

7. 1629 Charles dismisses Parliament
Charles needs money, reconvenes Parliament, who passed laws limiting the kings power

8. 1642 English Civil War Broke Out
Anti-royalist forces led by Oliver Cromwell take control of government

9. 1649
Charles I executed
Cromwell established a republic called the Commonwealth of England

10. 1653 Cromwell dissolves Parliament
Names himself Lord Protector, essentially creating a military dictatorship
