TECHNICAL OPTITUDE TEST (TATS) R.SARAVANAN AP/EEE PITS

“We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to.” Terri Swearing

IMPORTANCE OF APTITUDE –To find out how you would put skills, knowledge and experience into practice –To show how you would solve a problem –To find out what questions YOU might ask when faced with a problem –To find out how innovative you are; that is, whether you're able to "think outside the box" to come up with new solutions rather than using buzz words.

EXAMPLES OF TECHNICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Electrical Engineering – Describe the operation of an Op-Amp Circuit Discuss basic operation – differential input consisting of an inverting and non-inverting input and the op-amp amplifies the difference between the two. Discuss aspects such as output voltage, open loop, negative feedback etc.

What sources of evidence can you use? –Experience you have of working in a multi-disciplinary environment –Examples of project work that you have undertaken, displaying your knowledge and awareness of main project indicators such as time, cost and quality and the effect these have on the scope of work –Displaying a broad and comprehensive understanding of principles, practices and standards relevant to the role and the industry overall –A degree of competence in understanding the main business aims and objectives and company products

Preparing for Technical Interview Questions –Review job-related skills or experience listed on your CV and be sure you can describe them in depth. –Research and understand the skills that the company are requiring. Prepare answers that relate to your abilities in these areas. –Read industry specific publications. –Talk with professionals in the field.

Answering Technical Interview Questions –Be sure you understand the question; ask for clarification if necessary. –Use pictures and diagrams if they will help you explain the concept. –If you have to say “I don’t know’ do it in a positive way e.g. “I don’t know the answer to that question. However if I had to address that issue in the workplace, here is what I would do…”

Good Basic Life Lessons You are responsible for yourself What you don’t know may hurt you, or hold you back Don’t be afraid of something. Learn about it! Build on your strengths; target weaknesses Develop important soft skills Technical competency is the core of your career in engineering!

Definition of Leadership Leadership is the ability to influence others, with or without authority. All successful endeavors are the result of human effort; thus, the ability to influence others is a derivation of Interpersonal Communications Conflict Management Problem Solving / Decision Making

Interpersonal Effectiveness Interpersonal effectiveness is the capability of an individual to do this, influence others, competently. Leadership is a direct function of three elements of interpersonal effectiveness Awareness Ability Commitment

Working Effectively as a Team Working through and with people Thinking “we”, not “I” Getting the Team to work together by: – Giving the team the big picture – Dividing work fairly – Assigning responsibility to achieve accountability – Giving recognition

Interpersonal Communications Keys to Listening Listening is not just “hearing” the other Avoid distractions & make eye contact Concentrate on the person’s ideas & thoughts, not just facts Reassure the person that you are paying attention: ask questions Confirm that you’ve understood

What is critical thinking? How can you measure it? How much does student’s critical thinking usually improve? Faculty teach as usual Students take tests at beginning and end of the quarter Fall 2011 How do you teach to improve critical thinking? Can we increase gains in critical thinking by changing teaching? Faculty teach with new methods Students take tests at beginning and end of quarter Study Design

Critical Thinking Skills Evaluation of Information Creative Thinking Communication Learning & Problem Solving

Numerical Reasoning Tests the ability to recognise numerical relationships

Verbal Reasoning Tests the candidates ability to use verbal concepts logically

2D Spatial Reasoning Assesses the ability to think in 2-dimensional terms

Spelling Measures an ability to detect their own and other people’s spelling errors

Arithmetic Calculation Tests the candidates ability to use arithmetic quickly and accurately

Employability is a set of  skills,  understandings and  personal attributes that make youth more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefits themselves, the workforce, the community and the economy.’ -Yorke “To be employed is to be at risk, to be employable is to be secure” Imparting Employability into students about to be graduated is “unknown” in 90% educational institutes in India Quantifying the “employability” in the context of Industry vertical & specific role is limited to few “experts” and manually driven process today. EMPLOYABILITY GAPS Peter Hawkins “To create and sell a low cost/ high volume Technology driven product to determine the Attitude, Knowledge and Skill level of the student/prospective employee which facilitates the hiring decision of the employer and enables him to focus on correct training techniques/methodology.” OPPORTUNITY

Employability Gap – Cause 1 Education System - Designed in Industrial Age & Continued till date “Severe” Employability Gap Limited & Manageable Skill Gap Industrial Era Corporate World Transformed from Industrial Era and is Globalized with Disruptive Innovation Today

5194 engineering & technology institutions in 2012 Approved intake increased from 4.75 lakh in 2007 to 10.66 lakh in 2011-12 Mindless expansion of the technical education system Imparting Education with Poor quality skilled staff [ and many are understaffed ] A vast majority of students coming out of these colleges, which act more like coaching centres for prescribed syllabi, lack the true qualities expected of an engineering graduate and hence are unemployed or severely underemployed. Employability Gap – Cause 2

The shortage of appropriately skilled labour across many industries is emerging as a significant and complex challenge to India's growth and future. Each year over 3 million graduates and post-graduates are added to the Indian workforce Trainable 25% Readily Employable 10-15 % According to NASSCOM Many Require Significant Time & Efforts for becoming “Employable” Employability Gap – Quantified

The study of technology and engineering is a relatively new subject in schools in the world today.
