1 Today’s goals Introduce vocabulary for analyzing criteria
Practice classification/ordering of criteria Generate a final list of criteria for your selected movie genre

2 Class discussion- movie criteria
What movies did you select for review? What criteria did you select for these movies? Are all criteria of equal importance? Why or why not? What are some examples of criteria that are more or less important for a given genre?

3 Criteria types Necessary criteria Sufficient criteria
Accidental criteria

4 Criteria types Necessary criteria – a criteria that absolutely must be met in order for a subject to “pass,” but do not automatically make the subject good enough or sufficient We could also think of these as Primary criteria, the most important to be considered for the subject Failing even a single necessary criteria can cause the whole evaluation to fail Sufficient criteria – if these criteria are met, the job being rated meets your standard for excellence We can also think of these as Secondary Criteria, the things that separate a good subject from a great subject Accidental criteria – criteria that are nice or beneficial but not required

5 Problems with generating criteria
Different classes: The more general the category, the more difficult it is to establish criteria. It is difficult to compare items of different classes. How will you compare an apple to an orange? A comedy to a drama? What about a romantic comedy vs. a romantic tragedy? Competing standards: What is the ideal vs. what is realistically achievable? We should make sure that the threshold of success for a criteria is not set too high. Can a “good” subject meet the criteria or is the standard (or ideal) set too high? Influence of empirical measures: We are often tempted to evaluate something based on traits that can be quantified, but there are many things that cannot be measured quantifiably. Is a movie better because it spent $100 million on famous actors (who could still do a bad job)? Or is better to have a $5 million budget on no-name actors who do an amazing job? Use your judgement! Tyranny of cost: Sometimes the things we evaluate highest simply cost too much (this could be a money, time, or emotional stress cost; it doesn’t have to be monetary). It would be great if all CGI characters had the range of facial expressions of those in James Cameron’s Avatar, but is this standard too high (and expensive) for most moies?

6 Class activity- identifying criteria
In your new unit 3 groups Identify criteria for each of the following sets of situations, noting the similarities and differences with each, and identify each criteria as necessary(N), sufficient(S), or accidental (A) What are the characteristics for an ideal dog for a child under twelve? For a retired person? What are the features of an ideal part-time job? A full-time job? What should one look for in a restaurant for a special date? For a business lunch? What are the traits of an ideal grade school teacher? A college professor? What would be the features of an ideal fitness center for someone under 30? Over 50? (Adopted from exercise 10.1 in Ideas & Aims p. 287)

7 Individual activity- movie selection
Working individually Select a movie to evaluate for your WTE essay and answer the following questions What movie have you chosen? What is interesting to you about this movie? Why did you choose it? What genre does this movie fall into? Does it cross into any secondary genres? What criteria would you use to evaluate this genre of movie? Would you classify each of these criteria as necessary, sufficient, or accidental?

8 homework Read A&B 170-175 Blog Entry 7 Focus: Movie genre criteria
Now that you have selected a movie for review and identified its genre, you will move into the next stage of evaluation by creating criteria for evaluation of that genre Based on our discussions in class and the movie genre you have selected, decide upon a list of 3-6 criteria you will use for your movie review. For each criteria, explain in a sentence or two why you believe that criteria is important and it is necessary, sufficient, or accidental Note: This blog entry will contribute to the final grade for your WTE essay.
