1 Environmental Science Do Now 10-12-17
Do Now: Take your Do Now sheet out, your notes on biomes to answer each question. 1) Give 1 distinguishing characteristic for the tropical rain forest biome. 2) Give 1 distinguishing characteristic for the savanna biome. 3) Give 1 distinguishing characteristic for the chaparral biome. 4) Give 1 distinguishing characteristic for the desert biome. 5) Give 1 distinguishing characteristic for the temperate grassland biome.

2 Objectives Students will know the definition of a biome and the overall features of each major type of biome by performing a close reading, answering TDQs, taking notes and writing about 1 terrestrial and 1 aquatic biome. Mastery Levels: 70 pts. of annotation or better 4/6 TDQs answered correctly 1-3 paragraphs on 1 terrestrial and 1 aquatic biome

3 Homework - Copy Read the article on the Fires in Southern California, answer the quiz questions at the end of the article and answer the following TDQs: Now that you’ve read the article, what other aspects of the article should the author have discussed to make the reader understand the severity of this environmental disaster? What other questions does the author of the text leave unanswered or unexamined that may be worthy of being investigated?

4 Biomes of the World Unit III: Biomes October 12, 2017

5 What is a Biome? A large, relatively distinct terrestrial or aquatic region with characteristic Climate Soil Plants Animals Interacting landscapes

6 Engage Students will watch a YouTube video called “Ecosystems and biomes” Source:

7 Explore Students will read the article on the human impacts of grassland biomes Source:

8 TDQs on Grassland Biome Article
1) What is the main idea of the article? 2) Identify 3 statements from the article to support your main idea. 3) Explain how the author of this article, Kevin Carr, organized the article. 4) What was Kevin Carr’s purpose for writing this article, entertain, inform or persuade? How do you know? 5) How does the organization of the article help to develop the main idea of the article? 6) What is your INFORMED opinion about the article? What evidence do you have to support your opinion?

9 Pass out Biome Notesheets

10 Human Effect On Biomes Tundra
Oil exploration and military exercises result in long-lasting damage Taiga And Temperate Rain Forests Clear-cut logging destructive Temperate and Deciduous Forests and Tropical Rain Forests Removed by logging and development

11 Aquatic Biomes

12 Aquatic Ecosystems Important environmental factors Salinity
Amount of dissolved oxygen Availability of light for photosynthesis

13 Aquatic Life Aquatic life divided into Plankton Nekton Benthos
Free-floating organisms Nekton Strongly swimming organisms Benthos Bottom-dwelling organisms

14 Freshwater Ecosystem Freshwater ecosystems include:
Flowing-water ecosystems Streams and rivers Standing-water ecosystems Ponds and lakes Freshwater wetlands Estuaries

15 Estuary Estuaries Coastal body of water with access to both the ocean and fresh water from rivers Transition from land to sea; freshwater to salt water Called bays, lagoons, inlets, or sounds Shore birds, fish, crabs and lobsters, marine mammals, clams and other shellfish, marine worms, and sea birds

16 Zonation In A Large Lake

17 Freshwater Swamp

18 Marine Ecosystem Marine environments Intertidal zone
Shoreline between low and high tides Benthic environment The ocean floor Neritic province Open ocean from shoreline to depth of 200 meters Oceanic province Ocean deeper than 200 meters

19 Zonation In The Ocean

20 Evaluate Exit Ticket Write a 1-3 paragraph description about 1 terrestrial and 1 aquatic biomes using your notes. Be sure to include the climate, plant life and animal life in your description.
