What are prepositions? Prepositions are connecting words used to indicate relationships of some kind. Three main types of relationships: Place (direction or location) Means or agent (what caused the result) Time

Examples Place (position and direction)
Write your name above the line. The boy is behind the girl. The plane landed onto the runway. Means or Agent (what caused the result) He was hit by a ball. His success results from careful planning. Time I will see you on Monday. He likes to read in the afternoon.

Prepositional phrases
Start with a preposition and end with the object of the preposition. (noun, pronoun, gerund, or clause) The object of the preposition will often have modifiers to describe it.

Examples Preposition + noun, pronoun, gerund, or clause
My mother is at home. Preposition + modifiers + noun, pronoun, gerund, or clause. Along the busy, six-lane, highway, there was large, ten car pileup that delayed traffic for miles.
