CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
M: Friends in Christ: let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus to forgive us.

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us. Amen.

M: I ask each of you in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? C: I do.

M: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in his name? C: I do.

M: Do you intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as in God’s presence, and to strive daily to lead a holy life, even as Christ has made you holy? C: I do.

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for dedication to Christ.
C: Thank you, loving Lord Jesus, for freely giving your life for our sake. Make us your faithful followers, ready to take up our cross and follow in your steps. For you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING R: The first reading for the eleventh Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter 3 of Exodus beginning at verse 1. Exodus 3:1-15 The call of Moses CEV

Exodus 3:1-15 One day, Moses was taking care of the sheep and goats of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, and Moses decided to lead them across the desert to Sinai the holy mountain. 2There an angel of the LORD appeared to him from a burning bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire, but it was not burning up.

Exodus 3:1-15 3"This is strange!" he said to himself. "I'll go over and see why the bush isn't burning up." 4When the LORD saw Moses coming near the bush, he called him by name, and Moses answered, "Here I am."

Exodus 3:1-15 5God replied, "Don't come any closer. Take off your sandals - the ground where you are standing is holy.6I am the God who was worshiped by your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." Moses was afraid to look at God, and so he hid his face.

Exodus 3:1-15 7The LORD said: I have seen how my people are suffering as slaves in Egypt, and I have heard them beg for my help because of the way they are being mistreated. I feel sorry for them, 8and I have come down to rescue them from the Egyptians. I will bring my people out of Egypt into a country where there is good land, rich with milk and honey.

Exodus 3:1-15 I will give them the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live. 9My people have begged for my help, and I have seen how cruel the Egyptians are to them. 10Now go to the king! I am sending you to lead my people out of his country.

Exodus 3:1-15 11But Moses said, "Who am I to go to the king and lead your people out of Egypt?" 12God replied, "I will be with you. And you will know that I am the one who sent you, when you worship me on this mountain after you have led my people out of Egypt.”

Exodus 3:1-15 13Moses answered, "I will tell the people of Israel that the God their ancestors worshiped has sent me to them. But what should I say, if they ask me your name?”

Exodus 3:1-15 14-15God said to Moses: I am the eternal God. So tell them that the LORD whose name is "I Am," has sent you. This is my name forever, and it is the name that people must use from now on. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING 9Be sincere in your love for others. Hate everything that is evil and hold tight to everything that is good. 10Love each other as brothers and sisters and honour others more than you do yourself.

SECOND READING 11Never give up. Eagerly follow the Holy Spirit and serve the Lord. 12Let your hope make you glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying. 13Take care of God's needy people and welcome strangers into your home.

SECOND READING 14Ask God to bless everyone who mistreats you. Ask him to bless them and not to curse them. 15When others are happy, be happy with them, and when they are sad, be sad. 16Be friendly with everyone. Don't be proud and feel that you are smarter than others. Make friends with ordinary people.

SECOND READING 17Don't mistreat someone who has mistreated you. But try to earn the respect of others, 18and do your best to live at peace with everyone. 19Dear friends, don't try to get even. Let God take revenge. In the Scriptures the Lord says, "I am the one to take revenge and pay them back.”

SECOND READING 20The Scriptures also say, "If your enemies are hungry, give them something to eat. And if they are thirsty, give them something to drink. This will be the same as piling burning coals on their heads." 21Don't let evil defeat you, but defeat evil with good. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God .

gospel M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter 16 of the Gospel according to St Matthew beginning at verse 21. C: Glory to You O Lord. Matthew 16:21-28 Jesus speaks about his death and discipleship CEV

Matthew 16:21-28 M: From then on Jesus began telling his disciples what would happen to him. He said, “I must go to Jerusalem. There the nation’s leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses will make me suffer terribly. I will be killed, but three days later I will rise to life”.

Matthew 16:21-28 Peter took Jesus aside and told him to stop talking like that, He said, “God would never let this happen to you, Lord!” Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Satan, get away from me! You’re in my way because you think like everyone else and not like God.”

Matthew 16:21-28 Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross and follow me. If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

Matthew 16:21-28 What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself? What would you give to get back your soul?

Matthew 16:21-28 The Son of Man will soon come in the glory of his Father and with his angels to reward all people for what they have done. I promise you that some of those standing here will not die before they see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom. This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You O Christ.

Prayer after the gospel
M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for giving up everything and dying for us. Help us to forget ourselves, carry our cross, and follow you. C: Amen.
