Olaudah Equiano, Son of Africa (2006)
“The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa, the African” – 1789 Born c1745 and enslaved 1756; buys his freedom for £40 from Robert King of Montserrat 1766; works with abolitionist Granville Sharpe 1774; reports the Zong case 1783; becomes Commissary to the Black Poor 1786; travels extensively, including to Manchester 1790 Dies 1797; slave trade abolished 1807

Noor Inayat Khan Born 1914 and family moves from London to Paris 1920;
studies at Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris 1931 followed by the Sorbonne, University of Paris; publishes ‘Twenty Jataka Tales’ 1939; flees to England after invasion of Paris 1940; joins WAAF 1940 and recruited to SOE, 1942; airlifted to join Paris Resistance June 1943; arrested October; imprisoned at Pforzheim Germany; September 1944, executed at Dachau; awarded Croix de Guerre 1946 and George Cross 1949

Storybook process Select a folk story from one cultural group in class
Various literacy techniques to memorise story (lessons using drama, cartoon walks, storyboarding) Paired writing or teacher-scribed writing to ensure inclusivity Class edit Art afternoons to create all the elements for collage pictures – involving parents and all children will find something they’ve created in the book Design process creates pdf and art files for printing All books given ISBN for distribution purposes Promotion through Letterbox library
