1 Elements and principles of design

2 Recap What are the 4 elements of design?
Color, line, form, and texture What are the 4 types of lines? vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved

3 Objective Identify and discuss the elements of design.
Form and Shape Texture Identify the principles of desing. Balance, proportion, rhythm, and emphasis

4 Form Form is the three dimensional shape of an object.
Height, weight, and depth = Form Along with body shape, the clothes people wear create form. Forms change year to year based on fashion. Common forms: Natural form Full form Tubular form Bell form

5 Natural form Follows the shape of the body.
Clothes fit close and follow the natural waist and hips.

6 Full form Clothes like a full skirt or wide leg pants produce full form. Visually increase size and weight.

7 Tubular form Tubular form clothes are more vertical.
Straight dress w/o a defined waistline Straight leg pants or suit Creates the illusion of height and slenderness

8 Looks good on most people. Flared skirts and pants.
Bell form Looks good on most people. Flared skirts and pants.

9 Texture Texture: refers to how a fabric feels and looks on the surface. The yarn weave and finish determine the fabric’s texture Smooth, dull, rough, shiny, soft, fuzzy, crispy, shaggy, etc.

10 Texture vs. figure/physique
Fuzzy, loopy, and shaggy are thicker and bulkier = increase size

11 Texture vs figure Smooth, flat = decrease size

12 Texture vs. figure Shiny = reflect light and emphasize curves
Dull = absorb light and decrease size

13 Stiff and crisp stands away from body = increase size but also conceals some body features

14 Soft, clingy = reveal body’s silhouette

15 Principles of design Balance Proportion Rhythm Emphasis

16 Balance Objects balanced evenly on both sides of an imaginary line.
Formal and informal balance Formal- symmetrical balance, both sides are equal Informal- asymmetrical, different on either side.

17

18

19 proportion The relationship of one part to another and of all the parts to the whole. Clothing and accessories should be in proportion to body size and shape.

20 proportion If a person has a small body or is short, he or she should avoid styles that seem overpowering. Garments with huge pockets Big collars Large buttons

21 Rhythm The feeling of movement created by line, shape, or color in a design. Eye moves smoothly from one part of the design to the other. Like music- a sound is repeated, a beat is hear, and rhythm is produced. Achieved by repetition, gradation, and radiation of colors, lines, shapes, and textures.

22 repetition Lines, forms, colors, and textures are repeated in a design. Color in plaid shirt used to trim or in buttons.

23 gradation Varying rhythm
Stripes may be close together at top of sweater and become wider at bottom.

24 radiation Occurs when lines extend outward from a central point.
Gathers in a sweater form neckline to waist

25 Emphasis A center of interest ; stands out The first thing people see
Should be used to draw attention to a person’s best features

26 harmony Using the elements of design according to the principles of design creates HARMONY!!!!! Harmony- all parts of the design look like they belong together
