Where do symbols come from?
Can be inherited or invented and can be different within different cultures Most familiar symbols have been inherited, meaning they have been handed down over time For example, we don’t know for sure how the lion became a symbol of power, courage, and domination Once qualities were associated with the animal, images of lions appeared on flags, banners, coats of arms, etc. Became public symbol that showed up in art and literature

Symbolism is a technique used in literature when the author uses an object, person, situation, event, or action to add deeper meaning in context can be subtle or obvious author repeatedly use the same object to convey deeper meaning or may use variations of the same object to create an overarching mood or feeling often used to support a literary theme Some invented symbols in literature have become so widely knows that they often have gained status of public symbols (eternal childhood)

RED: passion; anger; power; violence; danger; often associated with fire BLACK: death; evil; mystery; the unknown GREEN: nature; inexperience; immaturity; hope; envy; growth BLUE: calm; sadness; peaceful; security; loss PINK: innocence; femininity; romance; caring; nurturing PURPLE: royalty; magic; enlightenment; good judgment
